Turbo 1986 Holden VL Calais – Owned by Paul Vavitis

When Paul first took ownership of his VL Calais at just 18, he may or may not had had an idea that he was driving what would become one of Australia’s most iconic performance platforms. The cult car that is the Holden VL. Fresh off the showroom floor, it was a statement of style, innovation, and raw potential. But for Paul, this car would grow to represent something far deeper, something truly personal. Over the years, he meticulously transformed it into a tribute to his late brother, Zac, ensuring that every modification carried significance beyond horsepower figures and aesthetics.
At the heart of this beast sits a fire-breathing RB30T, built to dominate. The engine boasts JE pistons, oversized valves, and a solid Wade cam, reinforcing its ability to withstand immense power while delivering unrelenting performance. A Garrett GT42R turbo provides the forced induction necessary to push this machine to the limits, paired with a Rajab plenum and a fully custom fuel system. A Motec ECU orchestrates the entire setup, ensuring every ounce of power is harnessed efficiently, resulting in an astonishing 547rwkw at the wheels.

Transmitting all that brute force to the pavement is a two-speed Powerglide gearbox, seamlessly handling the Calais’ monstrous torque output. To accommodate the sheer aggression of the build, All Race Engineering stepped in to fabricate mini tubs, allowing the massive FR19 wheels to sit perfectly within the rear quarters. Meanwhile, inside the cabin, a custom VE GTS interior in refined beige completes the package, blending comfort with performance-oriented luxury. But this car is more than just numbers and modifications, it’s a rolling tribute, a labor of love, and a testament to Paul’s dedication to his brother’s memory. Whether it’s tearing down the quarter-mile or cruising through town, this VL Calais remains a fitting homage to Zac, ensuring his legacy lives on in one of Australia’s finest home-built machines.
